Texas so far!!!

Hello everyone! I hope all is well. I am having a great time in Texas so far and I am going into my 4th week with the kids. There are 6 camp adventure counselors and about 7 staff members that work at the center as well. We all get along rea

lly well. The staff at the center like to call us a Real World cast because we are all strangers who have to live and work together. It gets to be a lot but I am lucky that I enjoy everyone. Sasha is my roommate, she is 20 and from Cleaved. We also work with the same children every day. She is my best friend here and we get along great. Meaghan is 22 and from Chico, she works with the older girls and is a nice girl. Hillary is 19 and is from somewh

ere in Ohio. This is her first time being away from her parents so she is having a harder time. James in 23 and is from somewhere in Ohio. He is probably my second best friend here. He has about 700 movies on his laptop so we are always having ‘family’ movie nights. Drew is 22 and is from Toledo, Ohio. He is our ‘director’ but really acts more like a friend.

Here on base there is not much to do. It is a naval air station where pilots come to get their licenses then they get transferred to other bases. It neat because there is always planes and helicopters flying around. On base there is a blowing alley, subway, mc Donald’s, the PX, and a few other restaurants. We don’t have access to the PX and it’s a major bummer. Our centers director takes us every Friday to the local HEB where we get the weeks groceries. About the only fun thing to do on base is going to the marina where we rent kayaks, paddle boards, and other water toys. We get a great deal on everything and its only about a 5 min walk from my place. On the weekends were pretty trapped on base because we don’t have a car. We have to rely on the center’s staff to give us rides or take the bus or taxi which can get expensive.

My weekly routine is pretty much the same, I work from 8-4:30 with 20-35 five and six year olds. There are three of us with the group but it is still overwhelming!!!!! I commend grandma Brenda for being a teacher for so long, I have no idea how you did it! We are constantly rotating activities every 30 minutes because the kids get bored and want other things to do. I already and forming relationships with these kids and I am really going to miss some of them when it’s over. I’m not going to lie, I could do without about 7 of the kids because they are complete monsters!!! The center has a lot of different materials and get us whatever we need which is so nice! Every Monday we go to the library, Tuesday we go blowing, Wednesdays we go on different field trips, and on Thursday and Friday we go to the pool.

We are trying to come up with a good weekend to go see Grandpa and Grandma in San Antonio, as well as making an Austin trip. It’s just hard to arrange everything with 6 of us.

I will have more updates to come as the weeks continue. Thus far, time is flying by and I am really loving it!!!

That's quite a challenge. Not easy to keep all those kids interested in the summer. Glad you're enjoying it and have good buddies to help. We're looking forward to seeing you ASAP! Love, Grandma Ginny

So good to learn about your first month in Texas, Felicia. Having your own classroom is very different from what you are doing. I'm so glad that you are excited about what you are doing and making new friends.
